Classroom Management

I had an experience not so long ago, this happened at an elementary school. When it was time for me to give my English class a group teacher was talking to her students and one was excessively talking and not paying attention at all. The teacher said to the student If he could shut up and pay attention, the student said why do “I have to listen to you if your nothing but a teacher”, the teacher was really mad that she told the student to get out the classroom, she immediately escorted him to the principal’s office.

While the rest of the students just stood there looking at each other I continue with my class, I think that I could of have handle this situation or avoid it by asking the student to PLEASE pay attention and not to yell at; I personally think that screaming in the classroom is unnecessary.

Bloom’s Taxonomy

Bloom’s Taxonomy

Remembering: Retrieve relevant knowledge from long-term memory

Understanding: Construct meaning from instructional messages, including oral, written and graphic communication

Applying: Carry out or use procedure in a given situation

Analyzing: Break material into its constituent parts and determine how the parts relate to one another and to on overall structure or purpose

Evaluating: Make judgments based on criteria and standards

Creating: Put elements together to form a coherent or functional whole: reorganize elements into a new pattern or structure

I never heard before of Bloom’s Taxonomy until now; I just realize that I have been teaching all this time under a low category, which is not good! I see that I need to change that and need to improve to get to the “Creating” level I want to be a better teacher and help my students learn in a more practical way rather than just theory. This is a very useful tool to see the levels that the students have to go through to get to the top level which is (Create).

An activity using Bloom’s Taxonomy

Activity: Best wish card

Remembering: Identify sender or intended audience along with words that could be useful to create your card

Understanding: actions that express a need or a desire in sentences

Applying: participate in writing sentences that express a desire

Analyzing: for what occasion is the best wish card for or for whom?

Evaluating: ask the student why is important to know to write best wish cards and to who else could they write a wish card to?

Creating: create best wish cards for different type of occasions

Literacy circles!

One thing I can say about literacy circles is that they can be very useful in a class. This is a very helpful tool not only for students or teachers but for all people in general this can be used in a class so that all the students get to participate and communicate their ideas, but most of all it can be a fun activity and students will get a deeper understanding of the literature piece that is given to them!

Rubrics! o_O

In this post I’m going to talk about this Rubric that I found in “Rubistar”.

As an English teacher I have learned that it isn’t easy to teach elementary school students, you have to have a lot of patience. When I saw this rubric I really liked it, because so far I have a Discipline problems in the school where I currently teach this affects my class, because the students start getting behind and the students that pay attention in class get annoyed and start word fights. Now that i found this rubric, I’m going to be giving it to my students and explain to them why is it for, the use of it and the description for number and see if this improves their discipline.

Ways to learn New Vocabulary! :D

In this unit 2 we are analyzing about Lexis in the “Wordle” at the top I decided to put all the key words that can help to understand the overall context and what it includes, I believe that the best way to learn new vocabulary words is to do activities that are fun, for example I consider that the best activity to learn new vocabulary is to do Crossword- puzzles, I think that is a way to help us understand better the concept of the meaning instead of just reading the definition and memorizing it. Playing games is a way to make learning easier, especially if English is not your native language.

Reflection! :)

At the end of unit 1 there are 3 excellent Reflection questions that make us analyze each situation and to see the way other teachers feel, in my opinion i believe that this 3 reflection questions make us think more about the importance of learning grammar. On the first question I agree that grammar is important for students to know, sometimes speaking doesn’t help students to learn a new language I think that everyone needs to learn grammar to speak proper English and to understand the structure of it. The second, I consider English as my first language and that i grew up learning the structure of the language on a daily basis but I still consider that that learning grammar is essential for kids, adults and all non-English speakers. Finally, the last question in this one I don’t think that by learning grammar terms will help the person learn more quickly ans easily, from my point of view grammar is important when a person is in a higher academic level,  and that little kids shouldn’t be treated like their in a college level to be learning all grammar rules.

First class! :D

My first class, Mmm.. what can I say???… I really enjoyed it!!! In this first class I really felt that being a teacher is not an easy job, yet very rewarding!!! I strongly believe that after this first class my perspective about the way I teach English has changed, during this course I’m going to learned a lot of new things that will help me teach my students.
